On the 15th January 2006, the Mountain Designs Fishing Competition was held at Ulverstone and the club organisers were extremely happy with the attendance from both anglers and the crowd. A mass of 70 Boats launched in what is hoped to become an annual event for the North West Coast of Tasmania. Around 1000 people lined the shores to see the weighing of the days catch and to see a flotilla of fishing boats ranging from small aluminium dingys to 8m+ fibreglass vessels.
This competition was mainly focused on the fishing of shark game species, namely Mako. In all there were 24 Mako sharks, two Blue sharks, with a further 8 sharks being tagged and released. The weather was quite pleasant however there was a nice 1m+ swell to make more than a few crewmembers provide additional mix to the already mass of berley trails!
Published results are as follows:
Heaviest Shark: Chet Wiseman – 103Kg Mako
Tag and Release: Nathan Dobson
Heaviest Scale Fish: Johnny Ahern – 2Kg Blue Head
Junior Prize Winner: Daniel Paull – 39Kg Mako
Saltwater Fly (Special Category): Steve Hambleton – 58 Kg Mako
