2005-06 Game Fishing Season

Posted By:  on November 24th, 2005

The start of the 2005-06 game fishing season is just about to get underway. Before we know it Christmas will have come and gone and the water will be starting to warm and with that hopefully are the large schools of baitfish. Until they arrive there is lots of time for bottom bouncing to try and taste a fresh crayfish or striped trumpeter.

During those quite winter months, lets hope every body has completed their winter maintenance on the boat and trailer to enable us to have a safe and hassle free start to the first trip out into the deep water. Don't forget to check the EPIRB and flares for their dates and the instructions on how to use them in an emergency.

The fishing calendar for 2006 starts a little earlier this year with a new competition at Ulverstone. This is a chance to fish out of a new port for a lot of us and we will have to keep an eye on the locals and follow them to the hot spots. Devonport's Mountain Designs is the proud sponsor and organiser of this new event and the committee hopes that club members will get behind this new early bird competition.

2006 brings with it new rules regarding the minium weights on line classes for the various tuna, shark and billfish species. These rules will apply this season and can be found on the GFAA website (www.gfaa.asa.au) or in the Australian Game Fishing Journal.

Tag and release should be very popular again this year. The new blue fin, marlin and shark tags are available by ringing me and I will post them out. All the tags that have been filled in (used) should already have been returned to the club. If you wish to use the marlin tags, a correct applicator is required.

Junior numbers in the club are down at the moment and we encourage all mums and dads to join up the kids. There are some great prizes for the juniors from our club and the GFAA National Junior Tournament. These forms only take a small amount of time to fill in and post to the coordinators or the club secretary.

With out our club sponsors there would be no 2006 season. So the committee would like to encourage all new and old members to support our sponsors and don't forget to mention to them you're a member of the GFCNT. (Might get you a slight discount?) A list of our sponsors can be found in the new 05-06 club booklet or on this web site.

So on behalf of the GFCNT committee and myself save your loose change for that dreaded fuel bill and only take what you can eat.

See you out on the water.

Vice President
