Jones Waste Management Easter Tournament

Posted By: Tim Duncombe  on April 6th, 2010

Easter Saturday saw a field of 14 boats head out of St Helens in some choppy Southerly conditions for Day 1 of the Jones Waste Management Easter Tournament. Stripeys were abundant with a sprinkling of small Albacore but it was Graham Purton onboard Serial Killer with the story of the day. The decision to run rods out just off Merricks put Graham onto his first ever Yellowfin before the fourth rod hit the water and was by far the best fish of the day weighing in at 66.6 Kilograms and looking hard to beat for the weekend, certainly a memorable first up Yellowfin Tuna.

Day 2 saw the water much more friendly but the fishing still hard going plenty of Stripeys still and Albacore scarce. The crew on Runadu 2 hooked up some Bluefin outside the shelf with Stuart Smith weighing a 19 Kg model but it was Ken Turner with the suprise of the day with a look over the side of Orion revealing one of the best Yellowfin caught off St Helens in quite some time laying on the deck. Tipping in at the scales at a cracking 74.6 Kilograms and the best fish for the competition.

Some other memorable moments were the sighting of a Sunfish and also a large Leatherback turtle around the Plateau area. Another important aspect of the weekend was anglers donating any small Albacore caught to the CSIRO for research into the species.

Many thanks to Jones Waste Management for their continued support of our Easter Tournament and congratulations to all anglers and especially Ken and Graham on two excellent catches

Next competition is the Hillcrest Tourist Park and Independent Oils competition to be held on the 17th and 18th of April, Entry was included in this years subs but remember to get your entry form in to confirm your participation.
