Early Bird 1000 wrap

Posted By: Tim Duncombe  on January 15th, 2010

On the 9th of January in near perfect conditions 45 boats put the hammer down in the race out the Mersey in what looks to be the final Early Bird competition in search of that winning Mako Shark.

Early Reports indicated plenty of Mako about with several big versions breaking tackle and this was reflected at the weigh in at the Mersey Yacht Club. Plenty of sharks caught but down in size from previous years and plenty of hard luck stories indicating the big ones were there but too good on the day.

The winning Mako was caught by Shane Smith on board GP Glass weighing in at 74.7 Kilos and taking out the thousand dollars cash proudly donated by Domestic Insulation. Second heaviest Mako was caught by Nathan Wells on Mustang not far behind at 72.9 Kilos.

Tag and Release section once again proving popular, with competitors tagging 19 Makos and 1 Blue Shark, to help science with its ongoing studies on the habits of the Mako species. This was taken out by Daniell Paull on Terminator with 5 Mako tagged, second place was a tie between between Glenn Bellchambers on Cruiseabout 2 and Stuart Smith on Runadu 2 with 4 tagged Mako each

All in All a successful day hopefully enjoyed by all. Many thanks to our Sponsors, Domestic Insulation, Mountain Designs, Big Bargain Bottleshops, Bob Jane T mart Devonport and The Mersey Yacht Club.
