Well 2008 has started off without too many fish about. Only three sharks were weighed in at the Mountain Designs Early Bird Competition, two Mako sharks and two Blue sharks being tagged.
The Competition started with a briefing at the Mersey Yacht Club Devonport at 6.30am. Strict instructions were issued with the importance of answering the radio sked and obeying the 5 knot speed limit of the river. Warnings were issued about the recent sightings of white pointer sharks and reminders they are a protected speicies and not to be caught.
The weather turned out perfect for the day after the last 6 weeks of suspect weather. With the recent weather pattern it has been suggested we are at least 3 - 4 weeks behind last years water currents.
A large crowd gathered to watch the weigh in on the foreshore with a crane being utilised for the weigh in, Project and Maintenance Engineering supply both the small crane and operator - perfect for this event.
The winner of this years competition was taken out by Luke Bezemer with a 97.2 kg Mako Shark fishing from the boat "Hammerhead 2" and skippered by Josh Hammersley.
2nd prize being caught by Darren Collins off "Lip-Ripper" with a 89.6kg Mako shark.
The two Pauls - Paul Hicks and Paul Snare aboard the boat "The Other Woman" featured in the Tag and Release prizes as they both tagged a Mako Shark each earning 1000 points.
All boats received a prize from the Big Bargain Bottleshop.
We would like to thank the sponsors for the day -
