2004/2005 Trout Season Now Open

Posted By: David Smith  on November 23rd, 2004

Well it’s here once again. The 7th of August 2004 saw the opening of the trout season for 2004/2005 and keen anglers have flocked to their favourite locations and no doubt, many have already caught a few hungry trout.

With the cold wet winter we have experienced so far, and with the lake heights up, this year should be a very good trout fishing year.

This year brings a welcomed opening of lake cresent. this lake has been renowned for it’s trophy trout. Many double figure fish ad some up to 28lb have been caught in the past. This lake has been closed since 1991 due to the infestation of the dreaded European Carp.

The closure of the lake had it’s positives; Carp numbers have decrease due to the ever vigilant electro-fishing by the inland fisheries service of Tasmania, and the trout have increased in size since no-one has been fishing the lake. Over the opening weekend, a number of 8lb Brown Trout caught; a nice way to start the season!

The opening of Lake Cresent has some new restrictions in place and anyone looking to fish the lake needs to pay attention to this. All details can be found in the Tasmanian trout fishing regulation pamphlet that is received when you purchase your fishing licence.

Tooms Lake located near ross is a very popular fishing location early in the season. Fish up in the highland lakes can still be a bit lethargic due to the cold weather and some people tend to fish the lower lakes; Tooms Lake is as such.

I only managed to fish on the 8th of august, and i chose to spin the shoreline. I managed to catch a 3½ lb female brown trout, but I was sure she still had eggs so i let her go.

My mate glen was fishing with soft plastics and this was the first time I have actually seen someone fishing with this type of lure. I couldn’t believe my eyes when after five minutes of fishing he had caught a small Brown. Then five minutes later, he had another!

After letting these go along with another small brown trout, glen caught a nice 2½ lb “Brownie”. All this within half an hour!

Next time i will be fishing soft plastics.

The general consensuses around tooms lake was that fishing was slow, however i did hear that one camp managed to catch 22 trout on the saturday night!

So with the tuna and Marlin gone, why not dust off the trout gear and try your luck.
