Rough weather causes cancellations

Posted By: David Smith  on April 17th, 2006

As we would all appreciate, the weather in Tasmania isn’t always mild and sunny! Unfortunately, two of the major competitions held at St. Helens have had to be partially or completely cancelled due to heavy sea conditions and we all respect the fact that humans lives aren’t worth risking when it comes to fish (no disrespect to the fish!). One other competition had been postponed.

The bad weather called for the St. Helens Game Fishing Classic to be cancelled on the Sunday which resulted in the prizes being distributed to all the fish caught on the Saturday, and I can assure you there were a few lucky anglers who literally “cleaned up” the prize categories with only a couple of fish. More recently, the Easter competition at St. Helens was cancelled for both days due to bad southerly seas. For those people interested in the club championship trophies, please email me you concerns and I will find out what is happening with these.

With the bad weather aside, as couple of nice Yellowfin tuna have been caught over the past month. In the Coles Bay competition, Michael Hay, jagged a competition winning 56.6Kg Yellowfin tuna and in the week before Easter, Clinton Howe landed a 59Kg Yellowfin caught off St. Helens. Unfortunately, I haven’t heard any news from down south with regard to the Southern Bluefin Tuna (SBT) but there have been some good numbers of SBT caught down off Tasman Island and Pedra Blanca. I will try and find out more specific information on the SBT numbers and sizes. (Please email me with details if you have any, thanks).

Apart for this, the water is cooling down at St. Helens, fish numbers have been low and quite patchy, with the best days being overcast and rough. So the pick of the fishing would be to travel down South to try for some SBT.
