After a few nice sized Yellowfin around the 40-45kg being caught during the weekend of the Hillcrest Caravan Park Competition, the tuna during last week were again very patchy. I heard that 3 or 4 boats never spun a reel on the 22nd Feb! On the following Friday, things heated up with large amounts of Albacore being boated. The charter boats caught over 30-odd each for the day and the odd Yellowfin about the 25kg mark. Saturday started off with a 3m NE swell with approx 10 to 20, N to NW chop on top; ideal fishing conditions and the tuna never let us down. To sum things up, Yellowfin from 15 - 30kg were caught and large numbers of Albacore along with a few Stripies. Late Saturday, the weather turned up a notch and reached the 25knot speed, which made for a slow bash back to the 'Point' from out over the 'Shelf'. The fish don't seem to be in close at the moment and this makes for a long slog out and back to the 'Shelf'.
Down South the fish by all reports (or rumours) seem to be better than up North. Marlin, Yellowfin and large Albacore s are being caught and tagged quite often. These might only be stories, but if you don’t go, you don’t know. The last week or two has seen the shark fishermen go into hiding on the East Coast with no reports of many sharks being taken; no one was complaining about the smashed rod or chewed outboard on the radio at the weekend. The Flinders comp is on at the moment and we await the results from this comp where the big fish are normally caught.
